Abstract

This article makes a case for developing emerging presencing approaches (EPAs) that build from, grow alongside of, and in some cases depart from Theory U-based approaches to presencing. Drawing from the work of Dynamic Presencing, five principles are introduced to support new EPAs as a way of advancing the greater field of presencing research. Given the focus of Theory U as a change and knowledge-making practice, for some time there has been a need for alternative presencing approaches that explore epistemological, ontological, and teleological framings of presencing practices, as well as deeper embodied and consciousness approaches to the subject of presencing mastery. Toward these ends, this article is intended as a reference to catalyze new thinking and visioning for the field of presencing research.

Author Biography

Olen Gunnlaugson

Olen Gunnlaugson is an Associate Professor in Leadership within the Department of Management in the EQUIS and AACSB accredited Business School at Université Laval, in Quebec City, Canada. With an interdisciplinary research background in presencing leadership development and transformative methods of conversation, he received his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia and his Post-Doctorate at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver.

To date, his research has been published internationally in 15 edited books as well as over 45 articles and chapters in leading academic journals and books. He has presented and keynoted at numerous international conferences, received five prestigious faculty level awards for excellence in teaching from universities in Canada and the USA and taught several thousand leaders, managers and executives at leading schools in Canada, USA, Austria, Sweden, South Africa and South Korea.

Globally, his current research addresses those leaders, managers and coaches who aspire to develop personal mastery in orienting from an inner place of deeply resourced presence, presencing and embodied practical wisdom in their lives and work. Over the last decade, he has been actively researching and developing a body of work called Dynamic Presencing as a vehicle for realizing this aim. As the focus of his recent book, this work introduces presencing practitioners to an in-depth series of five apprenticeship journeys for transforming their presencing practice into a generative way of life.
